Johnny wasnβt sure where exactly they were heading, only that Simon ask he follow. They were walking for what would have felt like hours if not for the company.
Simon was distracting as ever, as the pale moonlight brushed through the soft fur on his ears and across his maskless face. They were safe here, Johnny could tell by the assured steps Simon took winding through the roots and bushes as though heβd made this trek a thousand times before. What Simon didnβt tell him was that this was the first time heβd not gone alone.
βNearly there,β Simon says a few paces ahead of him, ducking under a low branch.
βSo ye arenβt planning on burying my corpse out here where no one will find it?β He said, dodging the same branch.
βThat would βave been a few paces over there, I reckon. Better ground for it.β
Before Johnny could reply with a smile playing on his lips, Simon had halted at last.
βCβmere,β he beckoned softly, and Johnny emerged in front of a small clearing, canopied by foliage like a protective cocoon. He watched Simon move to a large outcropping a few steps away, and sit in the shallow cave-like hovel. The ground looked soft within it, with a few blankets scattered about. Simon looked even more inviting sitting there, watching him.
ββS your den,β Johnny guessed in awe, more than a little stunned that heβd be entrusted to its location. He didnβt know much about rabbit hybrids, but he knew Ghost and his secrecy to its whereabouts.
Simon looked at him for a long moment, and Johnny would have worked up the courage to join him in it had he not stood abruptly.
βTurn around,β Simon ordered, and Johnny was thinking a retort about going to dump his body after allβ¦ but the mood didnβt seem right. It seemed a fragile thing in comparison to Simon. He turned without word, and listened to the shuffle of boots being kicked off, bare fur on clean grass and what Johnny could only imagine to be clothes falling to the floor.
He stood there, his quickening breaths thankfully muffled by the soft sounds of the forest cradling them in the spot Simon had made his den.
βYou can look now, Johnny,β Simon called over his shoulder.
(cue ghosts heat that he usually spends in his den alone)
