Chapter 66: Coming to Visit
Added 2025-04-09 23:25:21 +0000 UTCBy early August, My Big Fat Greek Wedding had raked in a jaw-dropping $162 million overseas!
That kind of haul put it just behind this yearâs Hollywood heavyweights like Armageddon, Godzilla, and Deep Impact. For now, itâs even outpacing Saving Private Ryan, which hit theaters two weeks ago.
Sure, the overseas box office for Greek Wedding is slowing down a bit, but Fox analysts are buzzing. They say this movieâs aimed square at North Americaâonce it drops there on August 20th, it might just steamroll those hyped-up summer blockbusters!
Hollywood and fans alike are losing their minds over it, dying to see what the fuss is about.
Word is, some folks in Asia got their hands on pirated DVDs and are secretly selling them. But the U.S. takes IP protection super seriouslyâthatâs FBI territory. Theyâve cracked down hard, so the damage is under control.
Meanwhile, Dunn Walkerâs hauled the whole crew out to Nevada. After a brutal 45-day stretch of action scenes, everyone on the Star Wars set let out a massive sigh of relief.
Now theyâre at the desert setâmostly dialogue scenes. The flashy podracing stuff? Thatâs all CGI for later, so itâs not too tough to shoot.
The past month of action filming, even with stunt doubles, left the two âJedi knightsâ pretty banged up.
âYou holding up okay? Walking alright?â Dunn asked, strolling over to Ben Affleck.
Ben had tweaked his thigh with a high kick but grinned through it. âIâm good, man. I can tough it out. The worst is behind usânow itâs just coasting to the finish line.â
âWhat about you, Liam? Howâs your back?â
Liam Neeson shook his head. âOne thought: no more action movies. Ever!â
Dunn couldnât help but laugh. Come on, Uncle Liam, with your skills, what else are you gonna do? Quit whiningâyouâve got it good!
This âdesert setâ wasnât just some sandy patchâit was a full-on custom-built stage on desert soil, costing over $8 million to pull off.
âAlright, everyone, quiet down! This isnât a studioâfocus up!â Dunn grabbed the megaphone, shouting to the actors in the performance area. âThe last month-plus has been brutal for all of usâIâm as sick of action scenes as you are! But weâve made it through. Weâre in the home stretch now, so letâs bring our A-game and nail this in three takes or less!â
âLighting team, get ready⊠soften the light a bit. Camera crew, set up⊠perfect! Action!â
âAre you a Jedi knight?â At an old dining table, young Anakin eyed Liam Neeson curiously.
âHowâd you guess?â
âI saw your lightsaber.â
Queen Amidala, dressed down in plain clothes, sighed softly. âOur planetâs in trouble. Weâre headed to the galactic capital for a mission, but our ship broke down, and weâre stuck here.â
âI can fix it! I can fix anything!â Anakin piped up.
Amidala shook her head. âI doubt itâwe donât have the parts.â
Anakin grinned wide. âParts? Easy! Thereâs a podrace coming up soon. Win that, and weâll score everything we need!â
âIs that a bet?â
âYup! Those little vendors around here? Theyâll bet on anything!â
This scene sets up the desert planetâs epic podracing moment. Since Dunn beefed up the final battle big-time, he trimmed a lot of these smaller buildup scenes. The dialogue mostly centers on Natalieâs Amidala now.
But this long take was giving Dunn a headache. The kid playing Anakin was still greenâtoo raw. Long shots are tricky enough in movies, and putting a newbie like him with seasoned actors felt like he was getting swallowed up.
First assistant director Christopher Nolan caught Dunnâs vibe and leaned in. âThis long-shot idea⊠maybe ditch it? Push in for close-ups instead. Simpler to shoot, easier to edit.â
Dunn nodded. âYeah, letâs do that.â
Ever since he and Natalie got together, popping into her dressing room felt way more natural. Even if she was changing, her assistant wouldnât bat an eye. Though Natalie herself had shooed him out a few times, all huffy and cute.
After the dayâs shoot wrapped, Dunn swung by her dressing room again. She was in a white shirt, brushing her hairâtotal girl-next-door vibes. So pure, so pretty.
âNat, youâre gorgeous!â
Natalie smirked, tossing him a smug little grin. âWhenâs this movie gonna wrap?â
âWith how things are going, about a week or so.â Dunn was stoked with the crewâs pace. âWhy? School doesnât start âtil late August, right?â
Natalie hesitated, a shy blush creeping in. âDunn⊠weâre in Nevada.â
He caught the glint in her eye and laughed. âYou wanna hit Vegas?â
âCan we?â Her eyes sparkled with excitement, practically begging.
âOf course we can! We could catch a show, maybe⊠try our luck at the tables. Who knows? We might strike it rich!â
Natalie lit up even more. âBut Iâm not 21 yetâcan I still?â
âHmm, good point.â Dunn paused, watching her lips start to pout. Then he grinned. âNo biggieâweâll just book a hotel room, wait âtil late, and sneak down for a few rounds.â
âA room?â Natalie zeroed in on that word, giving him a teasing, half-smirky look. âDunn, are you setting me up again?â
âWhoa, Nat, youâve got it all wrong!â He chuckled nervously. âI meant a suiteâyou know, with two bedrooms.â
âHmph!â She shot him a playful glare, then mused, âSome people just love picking on a young girl, thinking Iâm easy to fool.â
Dunn shook his head. âNat, Iâm only three years older than you!â
âYeah, but Iâve never had a fling. You, though?â She started counting on her fingers. âLiv Tyler, Catherine Heigl, Sofia Coppola, Nicole KidmanâŠâ
âHold up! Nothing happened with Nicole!â
âReally?â
âSwear on it!â Dunn said, all serious.
âWhat about your secretary, Reese Witherspoon?â She gave him a look like caught you.
Dunn coughed, scrambling for an excuse, when a surprised voice piped up from the door. âMiss Portman, you calling me?â
âAh!â Natalie jumped.
Dunn froze too. Heâd given Reese Witherspoon a small role on set, so sheâd met Natalie, but she was supposed to be in LAâŠ
âReese, whatâre you doing here?â Dunn asked, baffled.
Reese glanced at Natalie. Dunn waved it off. âItâs cool, just spill it.â
She nodded. âThereâs something I needed to tell you in person. Warnerâs people reached outâthey want to buy the Harry Potter rights.â
âBuy the rights?â Dunn blinked, then slashed a hand through the air. âNot for sale!â
Reese stayed calm but firm. âI figured youâd say that. Andrewâs dead-set against it too. But Warner⊠theyâre pushing hard.â
âHard?â
Dunnâs face darkened.
Reese nodded slightly. âAt first, it was just some British producer, David Heyman. We turned him down. Then he got JK Rowling on board to pressure us. We still said no.â
Dunnâs expression turned icy. âWe helped her out when she was down, and now sheâs pulling snake moves like this?â
Reese sighed. âWeâve held firm. Me and Manola have talked to JK tons of timesâbarely any progress. Then yesterday, a Warner VP showed up, saying they âhope Dunn Films can earn Warner Bros.â friendship.ââ
âThatâs ridiculous!â Natalie, even as an outsider, got it. Warner was flexing their muscleâstraight-up strong-arming! Howâs that not a threat?
âLet âem come. No big deal!â Dunnâs tone was rock-solid, a cold smirk creeping in. âTell JK and Warner: Harry Potter can rot in my hands before Iâd ever sell!â
âDunnâŠâ Reese looked worried. They werenât up against some small fryâthis was Hollywood titan Warner Bros., part of Time Warner!
âDonât stress!â Dunn snorted. âWhatâs coming will come. They think Iâm young and easy to push around? Theyâve got another thing coming!â
